Our story

Tops’l began not with a boat, but with an idea – a desire to build something lasting.

The principles of what would become Tops’l were set out in 1979 by our founder, Howard Brunt, to the friends who had sailed together on his boat Sphene. He and his wife, Karin, financed the purchase of the group’s first yacht – at the expense of moving house! – and ran the club until 1988 when Tops’l Sailcruise Ltd was incorporated.

Right from the start, Tops’l was never just about sailing. It was about creating something dependable, a place where people could stay connected. Sailing gave that idea momentum. It provided structure and direction, but the real heart of the club was always the community.

Every trip was hands-on. Members shared the work, the planning, and the learning. Skills were passed on, bonds were formed, and trust was earned out on the water. The boats were important, but it was the people who shaped the club.

Boats, voyages, and milestones

Over time, the club’s confidence and reach grew. New additions to the fleet made longer trips possible and opened up new destinations. Some travelled through French canals, others cruised along the Spanish coast or turned north toward Scandinavia. Crews came back with stories, new skills, and stronger friendships.

The history of Tops’l is not just in logbooks or maintenance records, it’s in memories. It’s in the crews who took Innovator from Spain to Malta and back again.

Even now, after decades of sailing, the core spirit remains unchanged. Shared responsibility, good seamanship, and the chance to be part of something bigger – these have always been at the heart of what Tops’l stands for.

The fleet

Pre-Tops'l
Sphene
Sphene yacht, pre-Tops'l

A 23ft Tankard and the first love. Sphene taught the founding members to sail – mostly the hard way – and gave them their first taste of Chichester Harbour and the Solent. She was small but mighty, and her legacy lives on.

1979-1998
Captivator
Captivator yacht, 1979-1998

Tops’l’s first official club boat, a 30ft Halmatic, launched in 1979. She carried the club through its formative years, from its first cross-channel trip to countless coastal adventures. After 25 years of service, Captivator was retired, fondly remembered and deeply valued.

1991-2004
Slangivar
Slangivar yacht, 1991-2004

Slangivar, a Beneteau First 35S, was a much-loved yacht that expanded the club’s sailing territory significantly. Her popularity made her a favourite among members before she was eventually sold to make room for the next generation.

1995-1999
Elucid
Elucid yacht, 1995-1999

A Southerly 32 with a lifting keel and twin rudders, Elucid gave members the chance to explore shallower cruising grounds and build experience on a stable, easy-handling yacht.

1997-2008
Innovator
Innovator yacht, 1997-2008

Tops’l’s flagship in the 2000s and one of its most beloved boats. Innovator, a Bavaria 41, crossed the Bay of Biscay, sailed the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Malta, and eventually returned to the UK via the Canary Islands and Azores.

1999-2005
La Liberté
La Liberté yacht, 1999-2005

A Jeanneau 32 that brought a new level of comfort and versatility to the club fleet. La Liberté was well suited to both local trips and cross-Channel passages, and popular with newer members.

2004-2013
Four Top
Four Top yacht, 2004-2013

Four Top joined the fleet as we looked to replace old favourites like Captivator and Slangivar. A Dufour 36, she worked alongside Innovator as we entered a new phase of offshore sailing.

2005-2010
Lacerta
Lacerta yacht, 2005-2010

A Starlight 35, Lacerta served the club on a memorable cruise of Scandinavia before being sold. A reliable boat with good handling, she was eventually retired as age caught up with her.

2008-
Jocalia
Jocalia yacht, 2008-

A Hallberg Rassy 36 and a favourite among more experienced sailors. Seen approaching Lanzarote during an Atlantic cruise, Jocalia remains part of the current fleet and a symbol of Tops’l’s blue-water credentials.

2010-
Carina
Carina yacht, 2010-

A Southerly 110 with a lifting keel, Carina was purpose-built for the club by Northshore. Her shallow draught opened up new cruising grounds and gave members a taste of shoal water sailing.

2013-
Elfida
Elfida yacht, 2013-

The club’s latest addition, Elfida is a new Dufour 380 acquired near the end of Tops’l’s fourth decade. A modern, well-equipped yacht, she represents the club’s continuing evolution and future on the water.
