Community sailing

Join the sailing community at Tops’l

At the heart of Tops’l is something that sets us apart: a genuine, friendly community. From day one, our club was designed not just to offer shared access to yachts, but to bring people together through sailing. It’s a place where you can connect with others, build confidence and skills, and enjoy being out at sea in good company.

Whether you’re joining a weekend sail, helping with maintenance, or catching up at a pub night, you will find that being part of the club means being part of something bigger.

Sailing together

Tops’l began with a clear idea: an alternative to expensive private ownership, where people could sail more often and feel like they belonged. Our founder, Howard, talked about it as similar to being a member of a small village – familiar, inclusive, and shaped by its people.

That spirit is still going strong. Members come from all walks of life, and new joiners are warmly welcomed, whether they are retired and looking for adventure, or just getting started as Competent Crew. Every shared sail is a chance to learn, relax, and get to know others who enjoy being on the water.

Events and group sailing

The club organises a rolling calendar of activities throughout the year. Some are regular fixtures; others evolve depending on what members want.

Club sails play a central role – semi-regular trips where members come together, often with a mix of experience on board. Whether you are new to sailing or a seasoned sailor, there is always something to learn and contribute.

Sailing events range from loosely organised group trips to more structured outings. If you are looking to build miles or grow into the Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper role, you will find plenty of opportunity here.

Maintenance weekends give members the chance to get involved and care for the boats together. The annual maintenance weekend in particular has become a staple in the calendar – part practical, part social.

Social gatherings happen on and off the water. That might mean a relaxed evening at a pub after a sail, or our annual dinner when stories are swapped and there is the opportunity to catch up with faces old and new.

Your journey into the sailing community

Many of our members say the community aspect of Tops’l is one of the best things about the club, and why they joined in the first place. It’s not just about access to a yacht share; it’s about being part of a crew.

And we are always keen to hear new voices. Far from feeling like outsiders, new joiners become established members of the club from the outset. The structure of the club, where every crew opportunity involves a mix of members, means friendships form quickly, and confidence grows naturally.

Everyone remembers what it’s like to be new. And everyone wants to help you feel at home.
