Tops’l AGM 2026 (2 of 2)

Stephen S writes…

Boats and Maintenance

Annual maintenance has been completed across the fleet (with thanks to the Bosuns, their teams and all the other members actively involved in boat maintenance).

Elfida

Elfida had her standing rigging replaced in the autumn, with remaining annual work completed at the same time. She has since completed shake‑down sails and is preparing for her delivery trip to southern Brittany, where she’ll be based for the season.

Carina

Carina had a relatively light maintenance period, including new anchor chain and rope and a replacement raw‑water inlet fitting.

Jocalia

Jocalia completed her annual maintenance but was subsequently diagnosed with serious engine issues. Following expert advice, a full engine replacement has been approved. A compatible engine has been sourced and will be fitted with a full warranty to get her back sailing as soon as possible.

Skills, Safety, and Using the Boats Well

Members were reminded to make full use of the website and mentor team, especially when returning to a boat that they haven’t sailed for a while. Boat‑handling days are scheduled, with flexibility to add more if needed.

Skippers were also reminded of some core responsibilities:

  • appointing an onshore contact
  • giving a proper crew briefing, including medical details
  • practising manoeuvres before leaving harbour
  • regularly practising man‑overboard drills

Cruises, Club Sails, and What’s Coming Up

Plans were recapped for Elfida spending the summer in Brittany, with a few remaining weeks still available to book. Club sails remain deliberately flexible, and members were encouraged to suggest alternatives or get involved in short‑notice sailing opportunities via the new WhatsApp group set up by Steve G if that suits them better.

Boat utilisation dipped slightly last year, largely due to Jocalia having a shorter cruising period and some weather‑affected weeks.

Finally: Getting Involved

Steve L will be stepping down at the next AGM and it was made clear that the club depends on members being willing to help out – formally and informally. Our articles oblige us at least to replace Steve (if that were possible!) but more directors would be desirable. This is far from an onerous role so please step up and help us lead the club.
