I write this story so that those who follow will understand the motives and passions
which inspired the creation of what was at the time, a rather unique concept. This
was nothing to do with sailing and everything to do with 'community'. A throw-back
to the old time village environment where everyone knew everyone else, the idea of
personal identity and having a place in this world.
Today it is all to easy to become isolated in this global age, I visualised a network
of friends an acquaintances within a kind of club. As we grow older and eventually
into retirement we tend to lose that everyday contact the workplace provides, it
is all to often the case that our social world contracts. Of course there exists
many clubs but, not with the same emphasis as I envisaged. 'Friendships' as the main
How the idea developed
To achieve this it was apparent to me that we not only had to bring folk together,
but it would be essential to keep them together long enough for bonds to form. Therefore
it was desirable that the structure be designed for long term commitment. A theme
was also needed. It just so happened that an opportunity presented itself. From these
seeds was Tops'l born.
A seminar was arranged for a few selected friends on the 9th. June 1979. The idea
was presented with beer and sandwiches. Everyone signed up, it was quite surprise.
